Pollinator Facts

  • More than 90 species of U.S. specialty crops require pollination, and we humans can’t do it by hand or machine very effectively.

  • According to the USDA, “During the past 30-plus years, our nation’s pollinator populations have suffered serious losses due to invasive pests and diseases, such as mites and viral and fungal pathogens, exposure to pesticides and other chemicals, loss of habitat, loss of species and genetic diversity, and changing climate. Numerous species of butterflies, moths, and native bees are either extremely rare or extinct.”

  • Without pollinators, we don’t have food.

  • There are over 4,000 species of bees in the United States, and over 400 are native to Ohio. You learn to identify Ohio’s wild bees and what to plant to support them.
